Can Taking Clenbuterol Help Build Muscle?
Updated: Jan 28
When it comes to building muscle, it's no secret that one must intake protein before and after gym but most importantly a good pre-work out to help perform at the highest level possible. See why many celebrities and athletes choose to go with clen over all non-FDA regulated pre- workout you would find at your local GNC. The following were trial conducted ....
A Clenbuterol Trial on Bicep Muscles
Clenbuterol’s effect on muscle gain was tested in this clinical trial [2] at the Hand Surgery Department of
Huashan Hospital, Fudan University in Shanghai. The research is titled “Randomized, Double-Blind, and
Placebo-Controlled Trial of Clenbuterol in Denervated Muscle Atrophy”. In layman’s terms, a group of
researchers ran a study on 71 eligible patients in their twenties who had muscle-tissue damage to their
bicep from trauma such as a motorcycle or construction accident (the trauma is the ‘denervated muscle
atrophy’ component of the title). The trial was randomized and placebo-controlled in that half of the
patients were randomly selected to be given clenbuterol over three months while the other random half
were given a placebo. The trail was double blind in that neither the researchers nor the doctors knew
which patients were the clenbuterol or control group. Results were monitored with the use of
identification numbers.
Clenbuterol and Muscle Gain
The patients in the clenbuterol group were given 120 micrograms of clenbuterol (60 micrograms twice a
day) over a 3-month period. Tests on the bicep muscle were run before and after the trial on both the
clenbuterol and placebo groups, including a biopsy of the muscle tissue to examine the fibers. The
researchers found clenbuterol to be extremely effective in retarding muscle atrophy (in this case, of the
bicep after injury). The decreases in muscle-fiber sizes were a staggering 60% greater in the placebo-
controlled group. The study concluded with the following finding:
“It is reported that clenbuterol, at incremental doses from 120 to 720 μg/day over 12 weeks,
increases the mass and strength of the healthy skeletal muscles in man.”
Minimal Adverse Effects of Clenbuterol
Side effects such as jitters and insomnia are a common and probably often-exaggerated aspect of
clenbuterol use for fat loss and weight cutting. However, the Huashan Hospital study, in which patients
were given 120 micrograms a day for 3 months, reported very few. Out of all the patients in the trial,
only one felt “transient muscle tension 2 days after the clenbuterol administration.” The study also
reports that clenbuterol at 120 micrograms per day was:
“well tolerated and not associated with any obvious discomfort, except for one patient with
transient nervousness.”
Out of the thirty plus patients in the trial who were given clenbuterol, not one had the shakes so bad
that they couldn’t hold a pen or coffee cup – anecdotes you’ll often hear from bodybuilders who have
used clenbuterol. In terms of clenbuterol’s effects on the heart, the Huashan Hospital trial report stated
that clenbuterol appeared to have “the safest cardiac profile” among the known β 2 agonists and
reported the following in terms of other organs:
“In our study, no adverse effects on liver, kidneys, lungs or hematopoietic system were
observed after the 3-month intake of clenbuterol.”
Conclusions About Clenbuterol Use
While it is impossible to come to any definitive conclusion about the effects of clenbuterol use for
weight loss and cutting cycles, we can at least look to findings from reputable scientific and medical
sources. Many human trials of clenbuterol use are currently underway and we will report on them here
as the results are published and become available.
